Internet speeds just got 4.5 million times faster – Interesting Engineering

1 min read

Researchers at Aston University have recently achieved an incredible breakthrough in internet data transmission speed. They have managed to achieve a rate that is 4.5 million times faster than the average home broadband. This remarkable speed was made possible by utilizing new wavelength bands that have not been used in fiber optic systems before.

The team collaborated internationally to achieve a data transfer rate of 301 terabits per second, equivalent to 301,000,000 megabits per second, using just one standard optical fiber. For context, a recent report by Ofcom on UK home broadband speed revealed an average of only 69.4 Mbit/s.
