When Nikolai Avteniev, a software developer, accessed an early release of Microsoft Corp.'s Copilot coding assistant in 2021, he immediately recognized its possibilities.

Developed utilizing Microsoft's GitHub coding platform and incorporating a version of OpenAI's generative artificial intelligence, the assistant displayed imperfections occasionally and made errors. However, Avteniev, an employee at ticket vendor StubHub, was impressed by its ability to complete code lines efficiently with minimal cues. Simply by pressing the tab key, Copilot seamlessly filled in the remaining sections.
